  • She was the daughter of Charles Henry Teague and Ellen Bassett.
  • Marriage*: Alice Teague married John Barber, son of John Barber and Susannah Victoria White, in 1918 at Brighton, Sussex, EnglandB.2
  • Married Name: As of 1918, her married name was Barber.
  • Anecdote*: Alice's son, John Barber, writes:
The Teagues are easily placed in Cornwall. They hail from the village of Creed, between Grampound and Tregony, and generations are buried in the churchyard and surrounding settlements. Alice’s mother was a Bassett, and fortunately there is a one-name study of the Basset side which has traced the family back several centuries, and obviates the need for further comment here. Alice’s father Charles Henry Teague was an asthmatic, and came to Brighton for ‘the air’, bringing his children with him. They settled first in Blagdon Rd near the station. Alice was the youngest, but a brother was born the following year (Frederick Teague).
Incidentally Alice acquired a close friend at her school, one Dorothy Stringer, later Lady Mayor of Brighton and one of the towns most colourful and iconic figures for many decades. They remained lifelong friends, Miss Stringer (though a Tory) providing discreet help to Fred’s later political career.
Alice went into service with a lady of private means out at Hove as a teenager, before marrying John Barber. The family then moved up to St Luke’s Road in the Queen’s Park area, and later to 14 Glynde Road. Alice lived there for many years after her husband died, and in 1964 her son Fred found her a flat at 8 Johnson Bank, Wellington Road. She lived here until her death from heart failure in 1973. Her daughter in law, Rita, being a trained nurse, held her hand as she died in her chair at Johnson Bank. She was the last Teague left in Brighton.1
  • Residence*: On 29 September 1939 Alice Teague and John Barber lived at 17 Glynde Road, Brighton, Sussex, England.3

  • Birth*: Frederick Charles Barber was born on 26 June 1920 at Brighton, Sussex, EnglandB; DOB from GRO Deaths Index record.1
  • He was the son of John Barber and Alice Teague.
  • Occupation*: Frederick Charles Barber was a clerk, Brighton Equitable Cooperative Society on 29 September 1939.2
  • Marriage*: Frederick Charles Barber married Rita E O'Leary in 1952 at Brighton, Sussex, EnglandB.3
  • Anecdote: Fred's son, John Barber, writes:
Fred Barber was brought up at 17 St Luke’s Road, and was educated at St Lukes and then at Elm Grove School. He left school at 16, and soon after joined the Brighton Cooperative Society at the Coal Office in London Rd.
During the war Fred wanted to be a pilot, but this was not an option normally open to the working classes, and he was offered a rear gunner’s post. Typically he turned this down and was promptly sent off to the army – but was diverted by RAF friends into groundcrew and became an armourer and inspector of factories.
In the early 1950’s Fred was elected to the Brighton Town Council as Labour Party member for St Peter’s ward, narrowly defeating the conservative candidate. The ward had traditionally been conservative ‘territory’ so this was something of a coup. Fred served on the council for several years, and was elected member of the Watch Committee. He was a man who liked to get things done for Brighton, and was not averse to working with the conservative members to bring this about. He was instrumental for instance in settling the dispute of the London Road barrow-boys. In those days London men used to come to Brighton and displace local traders: Fred Barber instigated a licensing system to resolve the acrimony that often resulted from the disputed pitches.
In 1951 Fred was canvassing staff at Brighton General Hospital. (The parties would compete for the nurses’ vote by bussing them down to the polling station !). In the course of canvassing he met a tall re-headed midwifery sister from South Wales, Rita O’leary. Rita was a catholic, and after a tempestuous engagement, Rita eventually deserted her church and family, and married Fred at St Barts in 1952. No member of Rita’s family came to her wedding.
In the late 50’s Fred worked for the Cooperative Insurance Society. He was a hard-working and successful agent, climbing the ladder, eventually being appointed Assistant District Manager at the Society’s offices in North Street and a director of the Brighton Cooperative Society. The Barbers also moved into an amazing house, 20 Hanover Crescent. This Grade 2 listed building was in one of the best regency crescents in Brighton, but half the road had been purchased by the Coop on account of their siting a milk bottling plant to the rear of the properties. Hence employees were allowed to rent the houses. It was a wonderful place to live and the Barbers set about re-creating an authentic regency interior. They held many parties in this house, which became a popular venue for their circle of friends. Nana Barber (Alice Teague) lived nearby and was a frequent visitor.
In 1973 Fred was offered a District Manager’s job at Sutton in Surrey, and so he and Rita left Hanover Crescent with mixed feelings. Fred retired from the C.I.S in 1985 and he and Rita went to live in a spacious Edwardian villa over at Eastbourne where they were very happy. Fred kept in contact with Brighton by virtue of his membership of the Masonic Society (he was Lodge organist) and drove the few miles down the coast road every few months. He kept busy by becoming Treasurer for the Eastbourne Association for the Disabled, where he revolutionised their financial situation in short order.
For all his life Fred was a ‘money man’, practical, wise, much respected and very moral person with a strong sense of humour. He never lost his attachment to Brighton and to St Bartholomew’s.4
  • Residence*: In 2001 Frederick Charles Barber and Rita E O'Leary lived at 10 Park Lane, Eastbourne, Sussex, England.4

  • Marriage*: Rita E O'Leary married Frederick Charles Barber, son of John Barber and Alice Teague, in 1952 at Brighton, Sussex, EnglandB.2
  • Married Name: As of 1952, her married name was Barber.
  • Anecdote*: Rita's son, John Barber, writes:
Rita was the youngest of a family of seven, and the only girl. The family were of irish descent and of course catholics living in a traditionally non-conformist ‘Chapel’ area. The church arranged for Rita to be sent to convent school at Salford when very young, where she was offered the traditionally stark alternative of a life either in the Order or in nursing. She chose nursing, so she was sent back to Ebbw Vale where she worked briefly in the cottage hospital before starting her basic training in Carlisle. From Carlisle she went to learn midwifery in Bristol and then taking up appointments in Bath and Cheltenham. She was then offered a ‘plum’ position as staff nurse at Hammersmith Hospital, London, and moved two years later to Brighton General Hospital as midwifery ward sister.
In Brighton she met Fred Barber and gave up nursing to marry him in 1952. At this point she became an Anglican.
Rita and Fred remained together until Fred died of cancer at Eastbourne in 2001. Rita stayed on at 10 Park Lane Eastbourne until 2004 when she moved to Chester to be near her son and his family. She lived at 19 Knightsbridge Court within sight of Chester Cathedral until December 2011, when ill-health and failing memory forced her to move to a care home at Mollington just outside the city of Chester, where she remains today.1
