Last Edited: 8 May 2023
- Birth*: John Inkpen was born circa 1655 at Sussex, England.
- He was the son of John Inkpen and Elizabeth (?)
- Anecdote: DISCUSSION
It requires some speculation to go back further that this John Inkpen (c1655-1721) who married Margaret Kennard at Laughton in 1680. However there are some facts to assist with this.
First, there is the burial of the widow Elizabeth Inkpen in 1708 at Laughton. It is not unreasonable to assume that this is John's mother. Secondly, there is a burial of a John Inkpen in 1678 and I believe it is a fair assumption to say that he is John's father and the husband of Elizabeth. These are the speculations I have made in this tree. - Anecdote: There is a third person who appears in the Laughton parish register in the late 1600s. She is Mary Inkpen who attested to the affidavit that John Inkpen had been buried in woollen in 1678. This had led some to believe that Mary might have been John's wife. However, Mary Inkpen did this for a number of the people in Laughton:
1678 John Inkpen.
*****
1679 Harrietta Montague
1680 John Woodcote
1681 Mary Woodcote
1682 William French
1682 William Peckham
Mary was buried on 1 Mar 1682/83. It appears that she may have been a nurse or someone who helped prepare bodies for burial. Mary's burial does not indicate that she was a widow, whereas Elizabeth's burial does, so for that reason I think it is safer to assume that Elizabeth was John Inkpen's wife. I have speculated that Mary Inkpen was an unmarried sister of John Inkpen who was buried in 1678.1 - Marriage*: John Inkpen married Margaret Kennard, daughter of Richard Kennard and Elizabeth Gibson, on 13 May 1680 at Laughton, Sussex, EnglandB, both of this parish.2
- Anecdote*: In a letter dated 25 Aug 1995 I received an Inkpen family tree and narrative from Mrs Dale Roach of Bredbo, NSW. A scan of these documents follows.
- Anecdote: The documents received indicate that the parents of John Inkpen are likely to be John Inkpen and Mary for the reasons given in the letter. However, as explained above, I believe the parents were John and Elizabeth.
- Death*: John Inkpen died in 1721 at Laughton, Sussex, EnglandB.
