  • Baptism*: William Inkpen was baptized on 9 January 1694/95 at All Saints, Laughton, Sussex, England.1,2

This would mean that he married late in life, aged 36 years, but would account for his apparent early death in 1754 or 1757. The E. Sussex Baptisms Index (17001790) was searched but there were no candidates for the period 170015.
  • Marriage*: William Inkpen married Sarah Miller on 18 April 1731 at Chiddingly, Sussex, England.1,3
  • Burial*: William Inkpen was buried circa 1755 at Laughton, Sussex, England. There are two entries in the Laughton parish register for the burial of a William Inkpen (26 Sep 1754 and 28 Oct 1757). It is not possible at this stage to separately identify them.4

  • Birth: William Gladman was born in 1724 at West Firle, Sussex, England.
  • Baptism*: William Gladman was baptized on 16 January 1723/24 at West Firle, Sussex, England.1
  • Anecdote: This is the most probable baptism for William. His first two children were named Sarah and John which would support this. Rosemary Hales and Bert Parsons put together a combined family tree for the GLADMANS using research done by myself and others around the world and also concluded that William’s parents were John GLADMAN & Sarah RICH.
  • He was the son of John Gladman and Sarah Rich.
  • Marriage*: William Gladman married Susannah (?) circa 1746.
  • (Witness) Will: William Gladman is mentioned in the will of John Gladman dated 21 August 1771 at West Firle, Sussex, England.2
  • (Witness) Marriage: William Gladman witnessed the marriage of John Gladman and Mary Martin on 17 February 1774 at Laughton, Sussex, England; witnesses: Wm GLADMAN Rich VINE.3
  • (Witness) Marriage License: William Gladman witnessed the marriage licence of George Gladman and Ruth Dollidge on 27 August 1778 at Archdeaconry of Lewes, Lewes, Sussex, England; George is a bachelor husbandman of Selmeston age 19 & up with consent of father Wm GLADMAN. • Death*: William Gladman died circa 1780 at Laughton, Sussex, England.
  • Burial*: William Gladman was buried between 1779 and 1784 at Laughton, Sussex, England.
  • Anecdote*: There are two entries in the Laughton parish register for the burial of a William Gladman (14 Feb 1779 and 28 Nov 1784). It is not possible at this stage to separately identify them.
  • Anecdote*: David OBEE, 4124 55th Street N.E., Calgary, Alberta, T1Y 4B6, Canada is a descendant of George GLADMAN, son of William and Susannah. Details of all his research into GLADMAN are contained in his letter of 1.4.1990. This includes a list of GLADMAN marriages 1613 to 1837 from the Sussex Marriage Index (there is no marriage for William and Susannah), and a list of baptisms from the East Sussex Baptisms Index (no GLADMAN's listed pre 1700, earliest baptism is 1721). There appears to be a gap in the records around 1710 to 1720 when William and Susannah would have been married. Were some records lost?
  • Anecdote: Note that there is a gap in the Sussex Baptisms Index for Laughton 1703-1829. Further work on Laughton requires access to the parish register transcripts.1

John Gladman

b. 24 September 1749, d. 1789

Parents:

Father: William Gladman b. 16 Jan 1723/24, d. c 1780
Mother: Susannah (?) d. 1798
Last Edited: 22 Feb 2021
  • Birth: John Gladman was born in 1749 at Laughton, Sussex, England.
  • Baptism*: John Gladman was baptized on 24 September 1749 at All Saints, Laughton, Sussex, England.1
  • He was the son of William Gladman and Susannah (?)
  • Marriage Bann*: Marriage banns for John Gladman and Hannah Wenham were published in December 1773 at Laughton, Sussex, England. 26 Dec 1773, 2 Jan 1774 and 16 Jan 1774.2
  • Marriage*: John Gladman married Mary Martin on 17 February 1774 at Laughton, Sussex, England, witnesses: Wm GLADMAN Rich VINE.2
  • Anecdote*: This is the actual marriage that has been recorded although the child John Gladman (bap. 1776) has parents John and Hannah Gladman. Note that no children of the marriage of John Gladman and Mary Martin have been found yet. Either John Gladman and Mary Martin are a different couple who left the parish soon after their marriage, or the marriage to Mary Martin is incorrect for whatever reason. My suspicion is that the name has been written incorrectly, and it should be Hannah Wenham. What is adding to the suspicion is that one of the witnesses is Richard Vine, and Hannah Wenham's mother's maiden name was Vine, although it is possible that Richard Vine was the parish clerk in which case he would have witnessed many marriages.
Note: marriage to Mary Martin was by banns but there are no banns recorded for her at Laughton.2
  • Anecdote*: There is a marriage licence on 27 Sep 1809 (Archdeaconry of Lewes) for a William Martin Gladman and Elizabeth Hope Aldridge. Could this William be a child of John Gladman and Mary Martin or a child of Mary's from a previous marriage or an illegitimate child of Mary's? On his marriage licence William is noted as a bachelor yeoman of Southover Nr Lewes.
There is also the baptism of a Frances Histed Gladman in East Grinstead on 12 Feb 1837 to a John Martin Gladman and Frances Gladman. His occupation is surveyor. His marriage is not in the SFHG marriage index.2
  • Death*: John Gladman died in 1789 at Laughton, Sussex, England.
  • Burial*: John Gladman was buried on 7 January 1789 at Laughton, Sussex, England.3

Thomas Gladman

b. 29 January 1756, d. 1820

Parents:

Father: William Gladman b. 16 Jan 1723/24, d. c 1780

  • Birth: Thomas Gladman was born in 1756 at Laughton, Sussex, England.
  • Baptism*: Thomas Gladman was baptized on 29 January 1756 at All Saints, Laughton, Sussex, England.1
  • He was the son of William Gladman and Susannah (?)
  • Anecdote: Thomas Gladman may have had an illegitimate child with Mary Shelley (but never married her). The reason for suggesting this is that there is a baptism, Thomas Gladman son of Mary Shelly baptised 17th December 1775, and a marriage of a Thomas Gladman in 1821 at West Firle which states: "1st regiment of dragoons". Thomas was at the Battle of Waterloo. The following information from Thomas Gladman's military record came from Susan Williams: (TNA ref: WO119/57/117) Born West Firle, Served in Romney Fencibles 1794-1800, 1st Dragoons 10 Sept 1800-26 June 1819; age 24 when enlisted in Dragoons. Discharged because of chronic rheumatism and worn out, age 43. Pension from Kilmainham Hospital. When discharged, 5ft 7and a half inches tall, brown hair, grey eyes, brown complexion, labourer by trade. Well written signature. Sue Williams also writes: "On the marriage of Thomas Gladman bachelor to Elizabeth Huggett spinster 7th day April 1821 one of the witnesses was Ann Gladman (I can't read the other - possibly a churchwarden). It is possible that Ann Gladman was the wife of my Gabriel Gladman as I can't see any other Ann Gladman living in the village at the time. This would also seem to point in the direction of Thomas Gladman, son of William, being his father". Although this is only speculation it has been left here in case more evidence is found.
  • Marriage Bann: Marriage banns for Thomas Gladman and Mary Nicholson were published in 1779 at West Firle, Sussex, England; Thomas is "of West Firle" and Mary is "of Willingdon".2
  • Marriage*: Thomas Gladman married Mary Nicholson on 29 September 1779 at Willingdon, Sussex, England, Thomas is "of West Firle". Witnesses: John NICHOLSON, John ALWORK.2
  • (Witness) Will: Thomas Gladman is mentioned in the will of Susannah (?) dated 6 June 1792 at Framfield, Sussex, England.3,4
  • Death*: Thomas Gladman died in 1820 at West Firle, Sussex, England.
  • Burial*: Thomas Gladman was buried on 28 May 1820 at West Firle, Sussex, England, 67 yrs.5
