In the Name of God Amen, I James Carter of the parish Pulborough in the County of Sussex, husbandman, being in perfect health of Body and of perfect mind and memory, Thanks be given unto Almighty God, calling to mind the mortality of my Body and knowing that it is appointed for all once to die, do make and ordain this my last Will and Testament, That is to say,
Principally and first of all, I give and recommend my soul into the hand of Almighty God that gave it, and my Body I recommend to the Earth to be buried in decent Christian Burial, at the discretion of my Executor, nothing doubting but at the general Resurrection I shall receive the same again by the mighty power of God
And as touching such worldly estate wherewith it hat pleased God to bless me in this life, I give, devise and dispose of the same in the following manner and form
First I give and bequeath to Mary my beloved Wife all and Singular my household, Goods and Furniture, Chattles, Debts dues -----, Sum and Sums of money together with free Liberty of Living or Letting the said House and premises wherein we now live, during the Term of her natural Life, together with free Liberty of selling any part or the whole of the Household Goods if need shall be and require for her support during the Term aforesaid
Secondly, I bequeath unto William and Phebe Stephens, the Son and Daughter of John Stephens of Kirdford in the County of Sussex aforesaid, the sum of Five pounds a piece payable by my Executor herein after mentioned, as they shall respectively each of them, arrive at the Age of Twenty One Years
Thirdly, I give and bequeath unto James Carter and John Carter my two Beloved Sons, All and singular my Leases, Messuages and Tenements, Household Goods and Furniture, Debts, Dues, Accompts, sum and sums of money, if any remain after the Decease of my beloved Wife aforesaid, to be equally divided and shared between them and their Heirs forever.
And I do hereby likewise constitute, make and ordain James Carter aforesaid, the sole Executor of this my last Will and Testament to see that all and singular the said Legacies and Bequests Be faithfully done and performed according to the true intent and meaning of these presents.
And I do hereby utterly disallow, revoke and disannul all and every other former Testaments, Wills, Legacies and Bequests, and Executors by me in any ways before named, willed and Bequeathed, certifying and confirming this and no other to be my last Will and Testament

Richard Thomas

- Marriage*: Richard Thomas married Susannah (?) on 26 November 1666.
- Anecdote: The Sussex Marriage Index has the marriage of Richard TOOMAS to an unkown spouse on 26 Nov 1666 at Lewes St Thomas Cliffe. This is likely the marriage of our Richard Thomas as the baptisms to Richard and Susanna start the year after this, in 1667.1
- Occupation*: Richard Thomas was a butcher in Lewes in 1670.2,3
- Anecdote*: Richard Thomas was included in a list of people connected with the Baptist movement in Lewes. They usually met in a house about a mile from Lewes and on Sunday 29th May 1670 they were informed upon, convicted and Richard was fined 5 shillings. Richard had his weights confiscated in lieu by an unruly group who wandered through the town exacting the fines in any way they could from those who had attended the service.4
- Death*: Richard Thomas died in 1691. Butcher of Place: died Sussex. Source is PCC Wills held at the National Archives. Possibility only - needs further work.5
