John Funnell

b. 1 October 1792
FatherRichard Funnell b. c 1765, d. 1848
MotherElizabeth Inkpen b. 12 Mar 1769, d. 1809
John Funnell was born in 1792 at Laughton, Sussex, England.
John Funnell was baptized on 1 October 1792 at Laughton, Sussex, England.1 He was the son of Richard Funnell and Elizabeth Inkpen.
This person is a work in progress. The marriage to Sarah Colbran in 1819 was considered a possibility but is unlikley as the John who married Sarah has a consistent age of c1798 in the census records.
Two possible candidates for deaths:
Jan-Mar 1867, Lewes, Vol 2b Page 121, age 75 years (i.e. born c1792)
Jul-Sep 1868, Hailsham, Vol 2b Page 40, age 76 years.
There may be more. There are four baptisms of a John Funnell in 1792: in Chiddingly, Fletching, Laughton & Hamsey.

Henry Funnell

b. 20 December 1799
FatherRichard Funnell b. c 1765, d. 1848
MotherElizabeth Inkpen b. 12 Mar 1769, d. 1809
Henry Funnell was born on 20 December 1799 at Chiddingly, Sussex, England.1 He was the son of Richard Funnell and Elizabeth Inkpen.
Henry Funnell was baptized on 29 December 1799 at Chiddingly, Sussex, England.1
There was another Henry Funnell born at Chiddingly one day before this Henry Funnell. His parents were John and Elizabeth Baker Funnell. This earlier Henry married Mary Sargent at Battle, Sussex and emigrated to the USA in 1840 and settled in Huntington, New York. His headstone clearly shows his date of birth as 19 Dec 1799. He is buried at Huntington Rural Cemetery, New York, USA.2
On 28 May 1821 Henry Funnell lived at Rookery (large cottage), Chiddingly, Sussex, England.3
Chiddingly is one of those rare parishes where the 28 May 1821 census has survived with a detailed description of the inhabitants, similar in format to the 1841 census. Henry was living with his parents, Richard and Ruth Funnell, at Rooker, a large cottage :
Richard Funnell 56 yrs Brickmaker; Ruth Funnell 63 yrs; Henry Funnell 21 yrs; Stephen Funnell 13 yrs; Edward Jenner 12 yrs; George Jenner 9 yrs.
Candidate marriages for Henry are:
1. 19 Nov 1821 at Heathfield: Henry Funnell m. Rebecca Thomson, both of this parish. Rebecca was buried at Chiddingly on 23 Aug 1846 age 48 years. They had children: Rebecca, Henry, Lucy, John, Thomas. Jane, Mary Ann, Charles. Henry was a labourer. The 1851 census shows him a widow, age 50 years, born Chiddingly, with children Thomas, Jane and Mary A. This Henry might be the Henry Funnell born 24 Oct 1800 at Chiddingly (baptised 1 Jan 1801) son of Thomas and Sarah Funnell (based on having a son named Thomas).

2. 12 Oct 1822 at Framfield: Henry Funnell and Martha Townsend, both of this parish. Martha was buried at Chiddingly on 21 Oct 1840 age 44 years. They had children Henry, John, Stephen, Caroline and Martha. Appears to have remarried Eliza as 1851 census shows this Henry as age 50 years, born Chiddingly. They had two more children: Eliza and Richard.

3. 20 Dec 1822 (marriage licence only): Henry Funnell and Caroline FORD. Henry is of Chiddingly and Caroline of Rye (Ripe? - check). Children: Philadelphia, Richard, Arthur, John, William, Thomas(check), Walter, Tabitha. Henry died between 1841 and 1851. Henry was an agricultural labourer. He is age 45 years in 1841 census (rounded). 1851 census shows Caroline a widow, born c1805 at Ripe.

The following were discounted:
6 Jul 1822 at Brighton: Henry Funnell and Harriet Page. 1851 census shows Henry born Laughton so this is discounted. Henry is parish clerk.
8 Oct 1826 at Battle: Henry Funnell and Mary Sargent, both of this parish. Discounted (see note at top of page)
8 Oct 1826 at Piddinghoe: Henry Funnell and Lucy Dunn, both of this parish. 1851 census shows Henry age 53 years born Chiddingly. Children: Lucy, Mary, Frances, Elizabeth, Mary Ann, Henry. Discounted - Henry too old.

Moses Bartlett was baptized on 28 March 1784 at Pitney, Somerset, England. He was the son of William Bartlett and Elizabeth Masters.
Note: Theconnection of this child to William and Betty/Elizabeth is suspect as Sarah Hawkins, who transcribed the register, records the parents as "Sam? and Eliz:th?". Also, Moses is not mentioned in William's will made in 1811. It has been left here for further investigation.1
