- Birth*: Alfred Yates was born circa 1825 at Marylebone, London, England.
- He was the son of Saul Yates and Sarah Isaacs.
- Anecdote*: Alfred Yates is thought to be the father of Elizabeth Barber's illegitimate child, Alfred Barber, born 28 Dec 1850. This cannot be proved, so must be treated with caution, but he is the obvious candidate.
The 1851 census for All Hallows London Wall, Middlesex at 38 Camomile St has Elizabeth Barber, age 22 yrs, unmarried, servant, b. Brighton, Sussex. She is working for Saul and Sarah Yates whose eldest son Alfred (the likely father) is aged 26 years. Both Saul and Alfred are solicitors. Alfred Yates died on 23 Oct 1851 at 38 Camomile Street, London of phthisis (TB).
On 13 Apr 1857, Saul and Sarah Yates emigrated to New Zealand with Elizabeth Barber on the ship "Dinapore" departing Gravesend and arriving Auckland on 5 Aug 1857. On the voyage Elizabeth met her future husband, George Tunnicliffe, and they married on 8 Aug 1857, 3 days after arriving in Auckland. The child Alfred Barber was left behind with his grandparents in Brighton. The 1861 census shows him living with his grandparents, Robert & Jane Barber, in Brighton (age 10 yrs born London). Alfred's marriage certificate states his father is Robert Barber, a cabinet maker, who was actually his grandfather. Today, Elizabeth Tunnicliffe (nee Barber) has many descendants in New Zealand. - Death*: Alfred Yates died on 23 October 1851 at London, England.
