Edward Burton

• Birth*: Edward Burton was born on 15 March 1792 at Bermondsey, Surrey, England; DOB from Edward's apprenticeship records.¹
• Anecdote*: "Edward Burton apprenticed as a waterman in Greenwich, Kent, just east of Bermondsey and across the Thames River from London. On 31 Dec 1807, there is a record of his "binding" to a Robert Phillips and his release from such binding on 26 Oct 1815. Thus, Edward apprenticed from the age of 15 to 23. The records go on to tell of a binding of an apprenticing waterman to Edward Burton in 1831. They also note numerous other Burton names in the Guild of Watermen and Lightermen who worked in the adjacent communities of Bermondsey, Greenwich, Westminster, Shadwell and Pimlico. Thus, it is likely that his Burton family had a tradition of work in the trade of waterman."
  A waterman worked on boats carrying people or goods across rivers, in this case the Thames River.²
• Marriage*: Edward Burton married Phoebe Barber, daughter of Thomas Barber and Mary Lipscomb, on 17 October 1819 at St Mary Magdalene Church, Bermondsey, Surrey, England, botp, witness William Burton and Elizabeth Jane Green.²
