John Farmer

Parents:

• Birth*: John Farmer was born circa 1490 at Rotherfield, Sussex, England^B.
• He was the son of Thomas Farmer and Elizabeth (?)
• Anecdote*: The will of John's father, Thomas Farmer of Rotherfield (1529) mentions a son John who has a daughter Joan. It is speculated that this is the John Farmer later recorded as a Curate and Clerk at Rotherfield St Denys 1540-1544, and who was instituted (installed) at Warbleton as their pastor in 1556.
  There is a burial at Warbleton St Mary on 12 Aug 1570 of a John FARMOR who was " clerk & parson of this parish". There is also an earlier burial of a "Jone FARMER" on 14 Jan 1561 " verger" who may be the daughter Joan mentioned in his father's will.
  There are no baptisms in the SFHG index at Warbleton before 1559, so it is not possible to reconstruct this family with hard evidence. However, John Fermor the parson is likely the origin of the Fermor/Farmer families at Warbleton. What follows is conjecture based on some clues obtained from various wills.
  The FERMOR/FARMER familes at Rotherfield came from families of status, with the father Thomas FARMER's brother or nephew William Fermor holding Walsh manor at Rotherfield. They were well connected to the church, and the family has prominent burials inside Rotherfield St Denys, so having one son enter the clergy would not have been unusual.
• Marriage*: John Farmer married Agnes (?) circa 1520 at England (There are no John Farmer marriages in the Sussex Marriage Index before 1544). Agnes is identified from her burial as "wife of John."

• Anecdote: Between 1540 and March 1543/44 a John FARMER is recorded as Curate and Clerk at Rotherfield St Denys church.^2,3

  There is a marriage for Robert FARMER at Rotherfield St Denys on 16 November 1539 (no wife name). So Agnes is likely to be a second or third wife and cannot be the mother of all Robert’s children. (Sussex Marriage Index.)⁶
