  This is the last Will and Testament of me John Bean of Litlington in the County of Sussex Gentleman First I Order and Direct that all my just Debts and Funeral Expences be paid and discharged by my Executors hereinafter Named I Give and Bequeath unto my Housekeeper M^rs Mary Bridgeman for and during the Term of her Natural Life One annuity or Yearly Rent Charge of Fifty pounds of lawful money of Great Britain clear of all deductions whatsoever to be paid her half Yearly And to be Issuing and payable out of All and every my Manors Lands Tenements and Hereditaments which I do hereby charge with the Payment thereof And Do give unto the said Mary Bridgeman full power and Authority as often as any one half Yearly Payment of the said Annuity or Yearly Rent Charge shall be in Arrear and unpaid to enter on all or any part of my said Manors Lands Tenements and Hereditaments and distrain for the same in such manner as the Law directs in Cases of Distress for Rent Also I give and Bequeath unto Barbara (the Natural Daughter of the said Mary Bridgeman) now called Barbara Bean and who lives with me the Sum of Three Thousand pounds of lawful money of Great Britain to be paid her by my Executors within Twelve Months next after my Decease And in Case my Personal Estate shall be Deficient to pay the same or any part thereof I do hereby Charge my Real Estate with and for the Payment of the same and do

  my Farm and Lands called Charlston Farm situate lying and being in Westfirle in the said County with the Tithes and Lawdays together with the Tithes of the said Farm and Lands which I lately purchased of Lincoln Harrison Squire and my Farm call upper Clapham Farm in Lullington in the said County And Also my Farm and Lands in Willington in the same County unto my Nephew John Davis Son of Benjamin Davis of Ramsey in the said County Yeoman his Heirs and Assigns for ever And all the Rest Residue and remainder and Real Estate of what Nature or Kind soever and wheresoever I Give and Devise unto my Nephew Henry Head Son of Henry Head of Brookland in the County of Kent Esquire his Heirs and Assigns for Ever Provided always and It is my Will and meaning that it shall and may be lawful to and for the said John Bean and respectively being in the actual Possession of my said Real Estate by any Deed or Deeds Indented under his or her Hand and Seal to be Executed from time to time to make any Lease or Leases in Possession and not in Reversion or Remainder or by way of future Interest of all or any of my said Real Estate unto any Person or Persons for any Term or Number of Years not exceeding Twenty one Years so as no such Lease be made dispunishable of Waste and so as upon all and every such Lease and Leases there be reserved to continue payable during the Term by such Lease or Leases to be granted respectively the best and most improved Yearly Rents that can be reasonably had and obtained without taking any Sum or Sums of Money or other Thing or Things by way of Fine or Income for the same and so as in every such Lease there be contained a Clause of Re Entry for Nonpayment of the Rent or Rents to be thereby reserved and so as the Lessee or Lessees to whom such Lease or Leases shall be made as aforesaid do Seal and Deliver a Counter part or Counterparts of such Lease and Leases respectively to be made as aforesaid And for all and every my ready Money Bonds Bills Notes Debts Securities for Money Goods Chattels and Personal Estate not herein before disposed of I Give and Bequeath the same and every part thereof Unto the said Joseph Calverley and John Ingram and the

  A Codicil to be annexed to and taken as Part of the last Will and Testament of me John Bean of Litlington in the County of Sussex Gentleman Whereas by my Will I have given to my Housekeeper Mary Bridgeman Fifty pounds a Year for her Life now I do hereby give her Ten pounds a Year more making together Sixty pounds to be paid in the same manner as the Fifty pounds a Year is by my Will directed to be paid And Whereas by my Will I have given to John Bean who now lives with me amongst other Lands and Hereditaments my House and Garden called the Malthouse House at Litlington aforesaid and to the Use with divers Remainders over Now I do hereby revoke so much of the said Devise as relates to the said House and Garden during the Life of the said Mary Bridgeman and Do hereby give and Devise the said House and Garden to her for her Life and from and after her Decease I give and Devise the same to the said John Bean and his Issue and to such other Uses as are mentioned in my Will I also give to the said Mary Bridgeman such and so many Household Goods and Linen as will be necessary or sufficient to furnish the said House to and for her Use and benefit I Also Give to her and to my Brother in Law Benjamin Davis to my Sister

  Davis his Wife and to each of their Children John Davis Ann Hannah and and Sarah Fifty pounds a Piece to buy them Mourning to be paid as soon as conveniently may after my Decease by my Executors I Also Give to my said Sister for her Life One Annuity or Yearly Rent Charge of Twenty pounds and do hereby order and Direct that the same Shall be paid into her Hands and her Receipt only notwithstanding her Coverture to be a sufficient Discharge for the same to be paid half Yearly and had and obtained by the same days and Means as I have directed respecting the annuity which is to be paid to the said Mary Bridgeman And Whereas I have by my Will given to Barbara Bean Three Thousand Pounds to be at her Disposal Now I do hereby revoke the said Gift and do Give her only One Thousand pounds and do Order and Direct that the other Two Thousand pounds shall remain in my Executors and Trustees Hands In Trust to permit the said Barbara Bean to receive the Interest Dividends and Profits for her Life and after her Decease to pay and Divide the same equally unto and amongst all her Children if more than one Share and Share alike but if only one then the whole to be paid to such Child And in Default of such Issue I do hereby Order and Direct that the said Sum of Two Thousand pounds Shall go and be applied to the same Uses as the Residue of my Estate is by my Will directed to be paid and applied And whereas also since the Making of my said Will my Nephew Henry Head is departed this Life Now I do hereby in Case the Person called John Bean therein Named and also the said Barbara Bean shall Depart this Life without Issue of their Bodies respectively as therein mentioned then I Give and Devise the whole of my Real Estate to the said John Davis and his Heirs and Assigns for ever and in that Case do hereby Charge the same when and as soon as he Shall come into the Possession thereof with and for the payment of One Thousand pounds to each of his Sisters the said Ann Hannah and Sarah Davis And whereas since the making of my said Will I have purchased of M?.   This is a Codicil to be Added to and taken as part of the Last Will and Testament of me John Bean of Litlington in the County of Sussex Gentleman Whereas by my Said Will and by a Codicil annexed thereto I have given unto my Housekeeper Mary Bridgeman two several Annuities or Yearly Sums of Fifty pounds and Ten pounds making together Sixty pounds for her Life Now I Confirm the said Gifts And in addition thereto I Give unto the said Mary Bridgeman for her Life the further Annuity or Yearly Sum of Forty pounds to be paid her in the same Manner as the said two other Yearly Sums are by my said Will and Codicil directed to be paid And whereas since the Making of my said Will and Codicil I have purchased Divers Lands and Hereditaments in the said County of Sussex Now I do hereby Give and Devise All and every the said Lands and Hereditaments unto John Bean in my said Will Named and who now lives with me To Hold the same to the said John Bean and the Heirs of his Body with Remainder in Default of such

  Issue to such Uses as I have in my said Will and Codicil directed respecting my Real Estate therein devised And Whereas since the making of my said Codicil and previous to the Marriage of Barbara Bean therein Named with her late Husband the Rev?   The Will and Codicils of John Bean late of Litlington within the Archdeaconry of Lewes Gentleman Deceased was proved the Twenty first day of April in the Year of our Lord One Thousand seven hundred and Eighty five before the Reverend Robert Austen Clerk Surrogate and so forth Upon the Oath of Joseph Calverley John Ingram and John Bean the Executors in the said Will Named To whom was Committed the Administration of the Goods &c They being first Sworn well and faithfully to Administer the same and so forth.

  Sacred to the memory of JOHN BEAN late of Clapham who departed this life 11th April 1785 aged 69. A gentleman well known for his superior judgement as a farmer and grazier as for his great punctuality in business in general. He was rather warm in his disposition altho truly sincere where he professed a friendship; a good master to his servants & ever attentive to the poor, but a man of no ostentation, his principal object was that of husbandry, and wherein this allowed. He made great improvements so that the world by his death lost a valuable member of society. The bulk of his fortune which was very considerable, and which he acquired chiefly by his own industry and good management, he left to his only son, JOHN BEAN, Gentleman, who in testimony of his gratitude and of the great regard he had for his father, caused this tomb to be erected.

  The confusion probably comes about because Susan's father-in-law was Thomas Seaman who also left a will in which the Susan's daughter Martha (mother of the above children) was left 10 shillings.
